Crit'Air Sticker for Rennes - UK Driver's Guide 2026
Updated 24 March 2026
Rennes is the capital of Brittany and a key stopping point for UK drivers heading to the French Atlantic coast or exploring the Breton countryside. The city introduced its low-emission zone in January 2025, making it one of the newest ZFEs in France. You need a Crit’Air sticker to drive in the city centre.

Rennes ZFE zone boundaries
The Rennes Métropole ZFE covers the central area within the city’s inner ring road. The zone includes the historic centre around the Place de la Mairie, the old town with its half-timbered buildings, the Gare de Rennes railway station area, and the main commercial districts.
The boundary follows the inner boulevards and does not extend to the outer ring road (rocade). The Thabor park, the university campus, and the République area are all within the zone. The newer developments around EuroRennes near the TGV station are also included.
What is banned
Rennes currently has one of the least restrictive ZFEs in France. Only Crit’Air 5 and unclassified (pre-1997) vehicles are banned. The zone operates at all times. Further restrictions on Crit’Air 4 vehicles are expected as the zone tightens in coming years.
Rennes - Zone restrictions
Permanent (24/7)
Exemptions: Emergency vehicles, disabled badge holders.
Gateway to Brittany
Rennes sits at the junction of the main routes into Brittany. UK drivers arriving at Saint-Malo by ferry typically drive south on the N137 directly into Rennes. Those arriving at Cherbourg or Caen and heading west through Brittany also pass through or near the city. The rocade ring road allows you to bypass the city centre entirely if you are just passing through, but any stop in the city for fuel, food, or sightseeing will likely take you into the ZFE.
The old town
Rennes’ medieval old town is the main draw for visitors, with its colourful half-timbered houses, the Parlement de Bretagne, and the Saturday morning Marché des Lices, one of the largest markets in France. The entire old town is within the ZFE. Much of it is pedestrianised, but the surrounding car parks and access roads are in the restricted zone.
Metro and bus alternatives
Rennes has France’s smallest automatic metro system (the VAL), with two lines covering the city centre and key suburbs. Combined with an extensive bus network, it is straightforward to park outside the ZFE and use public transport into the centre. The Villejean-Université and J.F. Kennedy metro stations both have park-and-ride facilities.
Fines and enforcement
Driving without a valid Crit’Air sticker in Rennes’ ZFE carries a fine of EUR 68 for cars and motorcycles, reduced to EUR 45 if paid within 15 days. As a newer ZFE, enforcement is building up with increasing use of automatic number plate recognition alongside police checks.
