Crit'Air Sticker for Brest - ZFE Guide for UK Drivers

Brest sits at the western tip of Brittany and is a Brittany Ferries port from Plymouth via Roscoff, an hour along the coast. Its low-emission zone is the most modest in France by design, and its start date has proved moveable.

What the Brest zone covers

The perimeter takes in the city centre and the most heavily trafficked routes within the city of Brest itself, rather than the wider métropole. Brest métropole deliberately excluded the Bellevue and Europe neighbourhoods from it, on the grounds that restricting older vehicles there would fall hardest on residents least able to replace them.

What is restricted

Only unclassified vehicles: those registered before 31 December 1996. Locally that is a little over a thousand vehicles, roughly 1 per cent of Brest’s car fleet. Every Crit’Air band from 1 to 5 is unaffected.

The restriction is also time-limited, which is unusual. It applies on weekdays only, in three windows:

• 07:30 to 09:00
• 12:00 to 14:00
• 16:30 to 19:00

Outside those windows, at weekends, and on public holidays, the zone does not apply at all.

A start date that has moved

Being straight about this: the Brest ZFE was scheduled to begin on 1 April 2025 and did not start then. Reporting since has been inconsistent, with some accounts describing it as postponed without a new date and others as belatedly active. We have not been able to confirm which from Brest métropole directly.

For a UK driver this matters less than it might sound, because the answer is the same under either reading. The scheme has never proposed to restrict anything newer than a 1996 vehicle, and never outside three weekday windows. If you are driving a car built this century, the Brest zone does not affect you whether it started last year or has yet to start.

If you do drive something pre-1997 and Brest is on your itinerary, that is the one case worth checking with the métropole before travelling.

Brittany and the western ferry routes

Brest is reachable from Roscoff, the Brittany Ferries port served from Plymouth, about an hour and a quarter east along the N12. Neither Roscoff nor the coast road is in any zone.

The rest of Brittany is similarly unrestricted. Rennes, the region’s only other zone, bans unclassified vehicles alone until Crit’Air 5 joins in January 2027, and its perimeter sits inside the N136 rocade so you can pass the city entirely. The Crozon peninsula, the Pointe du Raz, the Monts d’Arrée and the whole Finistère coast lie outside any ZFE.

Brittany is, in short, the easiest region in France to tour in an older vehicle.

Where that stops

It stops as soon as you head east or south. Lyon bans Crit’Air 3, 4, 5 and unclassified around the clock. Rouen bans Crit’Air 4 and enforces by camera, which catches drivers crossing Normandy towards Paris. Montpellier’s ban formally reaches Crit’Air 3.

A diesel from 2004 can tour the whole of Brittany without a second thought and be refused entry to Rouen on the drive home.

Fines and enforcement

Where the restriction applies, the national scale is €68 for a car or motorcycle, reduced to €45 for prompt payment. Given the narrow scope, the number of vehicles exposed in Brest is very small.
