Crit'Air Sticker for Nantes - ZFE Guide for UK Drivers
Updated 21 June 2026
Nantes sits between Brittany and the Vendée and is a popular stop for UK drivers heading to the Atlantic coast. The city introduced a low-emission zone in January 2025, but it is one of the gentlest in France: only unclassified, pre-1997 vehicles are banned, and only at weekday peak hours. For nearly every modern car, the zone is a non-event, but a Crit’Air sticker is still useful for the wider trip.

Nantes ZFE boundaries
The Nantes ZFE covers the area inside the city’s périphérique ring road, taking in the centre, the Île de Nantes, the château district, and the main commercial streets. The ring road itself and the outer suburbs are outside the zone. The restriction applies to driving through the zone, not to parking within it.
When and what is restricted
Nantes runs a minimal, time-limited ZFE:
- Unclassified (non-classé) vehicles - banned, but only on weekdays at peak hours
- Peak hours - roughly 07:00 to 09:00 and 16:00 to 19:00, Monday to Friday
- Crit’Air 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 - all permitted for private cars at all times
Outside the peak windows, at weekends, and on public holidays, even unclassified vehicles can drive freely. Any car with a Crit’Air sticker is unaffected.
Nantes - Zone restrictions
Mon-Fri peak hours only (approx 07:00-09:00 & 16:00-19:00)
Exemptions: Only unclassified (pre-1997) vehicles are restricted, and only at weekday peak hours. All Crit'Air categories 1 to 5 may drive freely.
Things to do in Nantes
Nantes is a worthwhile stop in its own right. Les Machines de l’Île, with its giant mechanical elephant, and the Château des ducs de Bretagne are the headline attractions, alongside a lively restaurant scene along the Loire. None of this is affected by the ZFE for a modern car.
Getting to Nantes from the UK
Nantes is well placed for the western ferry routes. It is around two hours from Saint-Malo (Brittany Ferries and Condor) and reachable from Roscoff (Brittany Ferries from Plymouth). From the north Channel ports, it is a longer drive south via Rennes. The city is a natural gateway onward to the Vendée beaches, the Île de Ré, and La Rochelle.
Fines and enforcement
The national fine of €68 for a car (€135 for heavier vehicles) applies in principle, but Nantes restricts only pre-1997 vehicles and only at peak hours, so the practical risk to a modern UK car is very low.
