Crit'Air Sticker for Toulon - ZFE Guide for UK Drivers

Toulon is France’s main Mediterranean naval port and the gateway to the Îles d’Hyères and the western Var coast. Its low-emission zone came into force at the start of 2025 and, unlike several of the other 2026 arrivals, it does restrict a real category of car rather than just pre-1997 vehicles.

Toulon ZFE zone boundaries

The Toulon Provence Méditerranée ZFE spans several communes along the coast rather than a single city centre. The perimeter includes Toulon itself along with La Seyne-sur-Mer, Ollioules, Sanary-sur-Mer, Six-Fours-les-Plages and Hyères.

That spread matters for visitors, because it takes in the places UK drivers actually go: the Toulon ferry and naval quarter, the beaches west towards Sanary and Six-Fours, and Hyères with its access to the Îles d’Hyères.

What is banned

Toulon restricts two categories:

• Unclassified vehicles - broadly anything registered before 1997
• Crit’Air 5 - diesels registered between July 1997 and December 2000

Crit’Air 1, 2, 3 and 4 vehicles are permitted. The metropole has indicated that Crit’Air 4 and eventually Crit’Air 3 could follow, but neither is restricted today.

The educational period, and why it is not a reason to relax

This is the detail that changes how you should read the ban. Toulon extended its educational period to the end of 2026, with sanctions applying to infractions after that date. So the restriction is legally in force but is not currently being penalised.

It is tempting to treat that as permission. Two reasons not to:

First, the deadline is close. A trip in 2027 in the same vehicle attracts a fine where a trip today does not, and a Crit’Air sticker never expires, so obtaining one now covers both.

Second, the fine scale is not trivial once it starts: €68 for a car or motorcycle, reduced to €45 for prompt payment, but rising to €180 if you let it run late. Enforcement of foreign-plated vehicles reaches UK keepers by post.

Getting to Toulon and the wider Var

Toulon is a long drive from the Channel, and the route matters more than the destination. Coming down the Rhône valley on the A7 means passing Lyon, which bans Crit’Air 3, 4, 5 and unclassified around the clock and cannot be bypassed on the motorway network. Continuing east along the coast, Marseille bans Crit’Air 4, 5 and unclassified.

So a Crit’Air 4 vehicle can legally enter Toulon but not Marseille an hour to the west, and a Crit’Air 3 vehicle can enter both but not Lyon on the way down. The binding constraint on a Var holiday is almost never Toulon itself.

Further east, Nice no longer restricts cars at all following an order in April 2025, so the Côte d’Azur beyond Toulon is more permissive than the stretch behind you.

The Îles d’Hyères and the coast

Hyères sits inside the perimeter, so the drive to the Tour Fondue jetty for the Porquerolles ferry crosses the zone. Porquerolles, Port-Cros and the Levant are car-free islands in any case. The Massif des Maures inland and the coast east towards Saint-Tropez are outside the ZFE.

Fines and enforcement

The national scale applies once the educational period ends: €68 for a car or motorcycle, reduced to €45 for prompt payment and rising to €180 for late payment, with €135 upwards for commercial vehicles. Until the end of 2026, infractions are not being sanctioned.
