Crit'Air Sticker for Montpellier - UK Driver's Guide 2026
Updated 24 March 2026
Montpellier is one of the fastest-growing cities in southern France and a popular destination for UK visitors heading to the Languedoc coast. The city introduced a permanent low-emission zone in January 2023, and you need a Crit’Air sticker to drive in the city centre.

Montpellier ZFE zone boundaries
The Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole ZFE covers the central area of Montpellier and several surrounding communes. The zone includes the historic city centre around the Place de la Comédie, the Écusson old town, the Antigone district, and the main commercial and residential areas within the inner ring road.
The boundary broadly follows the route of the tramway ring and the main boulevards that encircle the city centre. The Gare Saint-Roch railway station and the university campus areas are within the zone. The Port Marianne development and newer eastern districts are also included.
What is banned
Crit’Air 4, Crit’Air 5, and unclassified vehicles are permanently banned from the Montpellier ZFE. The zone operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Montpellier - Zone restrictions
Permanent (24/7)
Exemptions: Emergency vehicles, disabled badge holders.
Driving to the Mediterranean coast
Montpellier sits just 10 km from the Mediterranean coast, and many UK visitors use the city as a base for exploring the beaches at Palavas-les-Flots, Carnon, and La Grande-Motte. The coastal towns themselves are outside the ZFE, but any route through the city centre to reach them will take you into the restricted zone.
If your vehicle is in a banned category, you can use the A9 motorway to bypass the city entirely and reach the coast via the southern exits without entering the ZFE.
The Écusson old town
The Écusson is Montpellier’s medieval heart and the main tourist area, with its narrow streets, Place de la Comédie, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Promenade du Peyrou. The entire old town is within the ZFE. Most of the Écusson is pedestrianised, but access roads and car parks serving the area are in the restricted zone.
Tramway as an alternative
Montpellier has an extensive tramway network with five lines covering most of the city. Several park-and-ride facilities on the outskirts offer free parking with a tram ticket. This is a practical option if your vehicle is banned from the ZFE or you want to avoid city centre driving entirely.
Fines and enforcement
Driving without a valid Crit’Air sticker in Montpellier’s ZFE carries a fine of EUR 68 for cars and motorcycles, reduced to EUR 45 if paid within 15 days. The city uses a combination of police roadside checks and automatic number plate recognition cameras for enforcement.
