Crit'Air Sticker for Northern Ireland Vehicles - UK Guide 2026

Updated 29 March 2026

Northern Ireland registered vehicles can apply for a Crit’Air sticker using the exact same process as any other UK vehicle. There are no special rules, no additional documents, and no differences in the category system. Your NI registration number works with our DVLA lookup tool.

The process for NI vehicles

  1. Enter your NI registration number — our DVLA lookup recognises all NI registration formats
  2. Upload your V5C — your Northern Ireland V5C works the same as any other UK V5C
  3. Pay and receive your digital certificate — emailed same day
  4. Physical sticker arrives by post — 10–14 working days to your NI address

NI registration formats

Northern Ireland registrations use a different format to GB plates (typically three letters followed by up to four numbers, like ABC 1234). These are fully supported by the DVLA database and our lookup tool.

If you have a personalised or cherished NI plate, the lookup will still work as long as the registration is active in the DVLA system.

The route to France from NI

Northern Ireland drivers heading to France typically travel via:

Ferry to GB, then Eurotunnel/Dover

  1. Belfast/Larne to Cairnryan (Scotland) or Liverpool — ferry
  2. Drive through GB to Dover or Folkestone
  3. Eurotunnel or ferry to Calais

Direct ferry to France

  1. Dublin or Rosslare to Cherbourg — Stena Line or Brittany Ferries
  2. Drive directly into France from Normandy

If taking the direct ferry to France, you bypass GB entirely. The Crit’Air sticker is still required — it applies to all vehicles driving in French ZFE zones regardless of which crossing they use.

Documents

NI drivers need the same documents as any UK driver in France:

  • Full valid UK photocard driving licence (DVLA-issued, not an old paper NI licence)
  • V5C registration document
  • Motor insurance valid for France
  • MOT certificate (if applicable)
  • Crit’Air sticker

If you still have an old-format NI paper driving licence, you should exchange it for a photocard licence before travelling. The French authorities may not recognise the older format.
