European Breakdown Cover for France - UK Driver's Guide 2026

Updated 29 March 2026

Your UK breakdown cover almost certainly does not include France. A breakdown without European cover can cost £500–3,000+. European cover costs £30–50/year. The maths is straightforward.

Why you need it

Without European breakdown cover, a breakdown in France means:

  • Motorway tow: €130 minimum (regulated flat rate just to get off the motorway)
  • Onward towing: €2–5 per km to the nearest garage
  • Repairs: French garage labour rates of €60–100/hour
  • Vehicle repatriation: £800–3,000 to ship a broken car back to the UK
  • Your own travel home: flights, trains, or hire car at your expense
  • Hotel: if you are stranded overnight in an unfamiliar area

With European cover, all of this is handled by your provider at no additional cost (within policy limits).

What to compare

When choosing a European breakdown policy, check these features:

FeatureEssentialNice to have
Roadside repairYes
Towing to local garageYes
Vehicle repatriation to UKYes
Onward travel (hire car)Yes
Accommodation if strandedYes
Cover for passengers tooYes
No vehicle age limitYes
Cover starts from homeYes
Multiple callouts per tripYes

Vehicle age restrictions

Some policies exclude vehicles over 10 or 15 years old. If you drive an older car, check this before buying. Classic car owners may need a specialist policy.

Home start vs roadside only

Some cheaper policies only cover you if you break down more than a certain distance from home (typically 1 mile or 1/4 mile). For a France trip, this is less relevant since you will be far from home, but check if the policy covers you at the port or Eurotunnel terminal.

The main UK providers

RAC European Breakdown

  • Available as an add-on to existing RAC membership
  • Also available as a standalone European policy
  • Covers roadside repair, towing, repatriation, and onward travel
  • Comprehensive policies include hotel accommodation

AA European Breakdown

  • Similar add-on structure to RAC
  • Comprehensive European cover available
  • Includes relay (towing to a destination of your choice) and vehicle repatriation
  • 24/7 English-speaking assistance line

Green Flag European

  • Often the most competitively priced
  • Available as annual or single-trip cover
  • Good coverage for roadside repair and towing
  • Check repatriation terms carefully on cheaper policies

Specialist providers

  • AXA — standalone European breakdown policies
  • Allianz — included in some travel insurance policies
  • Your car manufacturer — some new car warranties include European breakdown cover for the first few years

When to buy

Buy European breakdown cover before you travel. Most policies can be purchased online and take effect immediately or within 24 hours. Do not wait until you are at the port — some policies have a waiting period before cover begins.

If you already have UK breakdown cover, check whether European cover can be added as an upgrade. This is usually cheaper than buying a separate standalone policy.
